Who is GU Energy?

GU Energy was founded in Berkeley in 1993, before energy gels were a category. The original GU formulation — maltodextrin and fructose at a 2:1 ratio in a squeezable pouch — established the template most subsequent endurance gels still follow. Three decades and several reformulations later, GU is one of the most-recognized brands in endurance fueling, with two distinct product tiers: the standard GU Energy Gel (budget tier, ~$1.50 per gel) and GU Roctane (premium tier, ~$2.40 per gel).

GU's position in the current landscape: chemistry with decades of testing behind it, broad availability across cycling, running, and triathlon, and the most accessible per-gel price in the category. It isn't a 1:0.8 dual-transporter race-day gel — that's Maurten and SiS's territory. GU's product design sits squarely in the 2:1 ratio band, suited to fueling rates up to ~90 g/hr.

What's their formulation philosophy?

Both standard GU and GU Roctane use maltodextrin and fructose at a 2:1 ratio. That ratio is the original Jeukendrup-lab dual-transporter mix (Jentjens & Jeukendrup, mid-2000s) — well-tested up to roughly 90 g/hr of carb intake, which matches GU's typical fueling-rate target (2-3 gels per hour). The 1:0.8 ratio that's now standard at the very top of the carb-intake curve is a different design choice for a different use case; GU's product line never moved there.

What separates Roctane from standard GU is the upgrades layered on the same carb backbone: Roctane has elevated sodium (~125 mg vs 60 mg per gel), a 1.4 g free-form amino-acid blend (BCAAs, histidine, taurine), and slightly more carbs (25 g vs 22 g). The amino acids are the brand's distinctive marketing claim; the literature on intra-exercise BCAA supplementation is mixed and the dose per gel is small. The most-defensible upgrade is the sodium dose.

What they do well

  • Reasonably-priced entry into the endurance-gel category — standard GU at ~$1.50 per gel is the most accessible major-brand gel.
  • Wide flavor variety with a long history of incremental refinement — Salted Caramel, Strawberry Hibiscus, Mandarin Orange, etc.
  • Caffeinated variants are well-dosed (35 mg per gel) and clearly labeled.
  • Roctane's sodium upgrade is the most-defensible reason to step up to the premium tier.
  • Brand ubiquity — feed-zone availability at most US races is unmatched.

Where they're overpriced

  • Standard GU at $1.50 per 22 g gel is ~$0.07 per gram of carb. Matched-macros DIY (maltodextrin + fructose + a pinch of salt) costs ~30 cents per matched dose.
  • Roctane at $2.40 per gel is ~$0.10 per gram of carb. The premium pays for the sodium upgrade and the amino-acid blend; the carb chemistry is the same.
  • The 2:1 ratio is fine for moderate-intake fueling but isn't the right choice for athletes targeting 100+ g/hr — you're paying premium-gel prices for not-the-premium-chemistry at that intake rate.

Pro & elite adoption

GU has long been the dominant gel in U.S. distance running and gravel cycling, with feed-zone presence at major races and broad sponsorship across pro and elite teams. Less embedded in the WorldTour cycling peloton than Maurten or SiS — GU's sponsorship pattern leans more American, more running-and-gravel-focused than European-cycling-focused.

Is GU Energy actually worth it?

Standard GU is one of the easiest gels to recommend at retail: the chemistry is solid, the price is fair for the category, and the brand is reliably available at races and shops. For athletes new to gel fueling, GU is a sensible default. For athletes already deep into endurance fueling who want race-day 1:0.8 chemistry, GU isn't the right product — Maurten or SiS would be.

Roctane is harder to defend at retail. The sodium upgrade is meaningful, but the carb-and-ratio chemistry is the same as standard GU. Most of the price delta over standard GU is the amino-acid blend, which has limited evidence at the 1.4 g/dose level — well below the doses used in the BCAA performance studies it borrows credibility from. For race-day hot-weather fueling where the elevated sodium matters, Roctane is reasonable; for daily training, standard GU does the same carb job for less.
