The brand that made a $3.75 sports drink the pro peloton's default. Real chemistry, contested performance benefit, and a drink you can replicate at home for ~80 cents.

Who is Maurten?

Maurten is the most consequential premium sports-nutrition brand of the past decade. Founded in Sweden in 2015, the company introduced an alginate-pectin hydrogel system that, in stomach acid, cross-links into a soft gel around the carbohydrate. Their pitch — that this gel allows higher carb concentrations to clear the stomach faster and without GI distress — became the basis of an entire premium category.

Adoption has been the marketing's biggest asset. Visma (formerly Jumbo-Visma) has fueled on Maurten for years. INEOS Grenadiers signed a three-year partnership starting in 2025. Eliud Kipchoge famously fueled on Maurten during his sub-two-hour marathon. The product has become the default high-carb drink in the WorldTour peloton and across elite distance running.

What's harder to find — and what we keep flagging — is independent matched-dose evidence supporting a hydrogel-specific performance benefit at the carbohydrate doses the product is designed for. The matched-dose comparison literature reviewed in Podlogar & Wallis 2022 has not reproduced a clear advantage over a non-hydrogel drink with the same macros.

What's their formulation philosophy?

Maurten's drink mixes (Drink Mix 160 / 320) and gels (Gel 100 / 100 Caf) all hit a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio — the dual-transporter optimum O'Brien & Rowlands established in their 2011 and 2013 studies. The drink mixes get there with maltodextrin and fructose; the gels with glucose syrup and fructose. The Drink Mix 320 carb backbone is identical to what SiS Beta Fuel uses; the gels share the ratio but not the chain length.

What makes a Maurten product a Maurten product is the alginate and pectin. Sutehall et al. 2020 reports that the alginate+pectin hydrogel format clears the stomach faster than a matched non-hydrogel control at rest (n=8 men) — the gastric-emptying mechanism is documented in vivo. The contested question is whether that at-rest gastric-emptying advantage translates to a measurable exercise-condition performance, oxidation, or GI-tolerability benefit over a matched-dose non-hydrogel drink. Independent trials say it doesn't reliably; Maurten-supported research has reached more favorable conclusions.

What they do well

  • Macros are right. Every Maurten product hits the 1:0.8 ratio, and the hydrogel pitch is what defends Drink Mix 320's 16% concentration — well above the 6–8% sweet spot a conventional drink has to live in.
  • Flavor is genuinely subtle — useful for athletes who can't tolerate sweet drinks at race intensity.
  • Single-serving sachet logistics are clean for race-day handoffs and travel.
  • Brand consistency across the line is unusually tight. The Drink Mix 320 and Gel 100 don't feel like different formulations bolted onto a shared logo.
  • Sponsorship transparency is good — riders openly say what they're fueling on, which is rare in this category.

Where they're overpriced

  • Drink Mix 320 retails near $3.75 per 80 g serving. The matched-macros DIY equivalent costs ~80 cents in bulk maltodextrin + fructose + salt.
  • Gel 100 retails near $3.50 per 40 g gel (25 g of carbs). The matched-macros DIY equivalent costs ~50 cents.
  • The price premium is justified by the hydrogel; the matched-dose evidence does not currently support that justification at the prices charged.
  • For athletes who train daily at moderate carb intakes (60–90 g/hr), Maurten is paying ~5× retail for the same physiology a kitchen-mixed drink delivers.

Pro & elite adoption

Maurten is the dominant fuel in WorldTour cycling (Visma, INEOS Grenadiers from 2025) and is widely used among elite distance runners and triathletes. Pro adoption is the brand's strongest moat — when an entire team's race-day fueling is standardized on one product, switching it out for a $2.70 alternative isn't usually a sponsor or an athlete decision. The matched-dose literature suggests this is a logistical and economic outcome, not necessarily a chemistry-driven one.

Is Maurten actually worth it?

Maurten is worth its price if (a) you've personally A/B-tested it against a matched-macros 1:0.8 maltodextrin-fructose drink and prefer the Maurten experience, (b) you're racing under a Maurten-sponsored program where the drink and the brand are part of the package, or (c) the per-bottle convenience and brand association are simply worth the per-serving premium to you.

It's harder to defend if you're paying retail for daily training. Bulk maltodextrin plus crystalline fructose plus a pinch of salt, mixed in 500 ml of water, costs ~80 cents per serving and delivers the same macros in the same ratio. The DIY teardown linked below documents the exact gram quantities. The only thing it doesn't replicate is the alginate-pectin gel mouthfeel. The matched-dose evidence doesn't currently make that mouthfeel worth the ~$3 difference for most athletes.
