Who is Precision Fuel & Hydration?

Precision Fuel & Hydration (PF&H) is the British endurance-nutrition brand most explicitly committed to the decoupled fueling philosophy: separate carbohydrate products (PF 30 and PF 90 gels, plus PF 30/60/90 drink mixes) and separate PH electrolyte tabs (250 to 1500 mg of sodium per liter), so athletes can dial in fuel and sodium independently of each other.

The brand's distinctive infrastructure is the Sweat Test — an in-person or remote sodium-loss measurement designed to match an athlete to the right electrolyte tab. It's a strong piece of customer-experience design: Precision sells you a measurement, then sells you the products that match the measurement. Whether the measurement is necessary at the precision they sell it at is debatable; the underlying decoupling philosophy is sound.

What's their formulation philosophy?

PF gels (PF 30 for 30 g of carbs, PF 90 for 90 g) use a 2:1 maltodextrin-to-fructose ratio — the original Jeukendrup-lab dual-transporter mix, well-tested up to roughly 90 g/hr of carb intake. Carb sources are maltodextrin and fructose, no hydrogel chemistry, no Cluster Dextrin. Sodium is intentionally zero in the gels because sodium is meant to come from the separate PH electrolyte tabs.

The PH electrolyte tabs are labeled by sodium concentration per liter — 250, 500, 1000, or 1500 mg/L — so you match the tab to your measured sweat-sodium concentration, then drink to your sweat rate. Pairing them with PF gels lets you carry, say, 300 g of carbs and 1500 mg of sodium across a 4-hour Ironman swim-bike-run leg with independent control over both variables.

Is Precision Fuel & Hydration actually worth it?

Precision is the best-designed brand in the category for athletes who genuinely benefit from independent control of fuel and sodium. The product taxonomy is clean, the gels hit a well-tested 2:1 ratio, and the decoupling philosophy holds up at any fueling rate.

It's also the brand whose retail prices are most directly replaceable at home. Bulk maltodextrin + fructose at the matched 2:1 ratio plus a separate sodium product (table salt + a tap-water bottle, or any inexpensive electrolyte tab) gets you the same Precision-style decoupled fueling for under $1 per equivalent serving. Use Precision on race day if you want the brand and the logistics; use a kitchen scale for daily training.
